You can intentionally design execution for success.
Steering a strategy through a resistant culture is like sailing a boat into waters full of icebergs.
Leading a digital improvement strategy in a skeptical, oppositional culture is no small feat. Resistance from the team, mistrust of leadership’s intentions, or fatigue from past initiatives can turn your strategic vision into a slow grind. But the biggest obstacle is not resistance itself, it’s failing to engage people in a way that cuts through the resistance.
Digital Sales Improvement Strategy amidst Skepticism
At one company, leadership rolled out an ambitious digital sales improvement initiative but faced extreme skepticism. The culture was already bruised by previous failed projects, leaving staff cynical about anything labeled “strategy.” The result was slow progress. What turned the tide was not pushing harder but getting the team more involved in key decisions along the way. This made the program highly successful, sales growth accelerated past industry growth rates, and the business won several public awards.
Here are three actionable strategies to win over cynics and drive your sales project forward:
1. Acknowledge the cynical culture without judgment
Before you try to argue against negativity, take time to understand it. Acknowledging people’s reality builds credibility and uncovers root causes of issues. Next time you’re faced with a cynical response, ask a nice big open question such as: “Tell me more, why do you feel that way?”
2. Focus on quick wins that resolve pain points
Oppositional cultures thrive on skepticism, but a few visible, immediate wins can shift the tone, especially if they resolve problems and pain points. I challenge you this week to find a visible win that you can celebrate with your team. Watch your momentum grow.
3. Find and empower your supporters
Even in a cynical environment, there are believers. Go find them, ensure they feel valued, and get them involved.
When cynical, oppositional cultures feel heard, see progress, and feel valuable, skepticism fades and momentum builds. Apply these principles to transform resistance into results, one conversation and one quick win at a time
Quote of the week
“The secret of getting ahead is getting started and maintaining the momentum.”
Mark Twain
