An essential part of turbocharging your strategy execution, project management, and transformation is to build turbocharged project teams. Here are 3 quick tips
- Get the right mix of resources on your team. Sounds obvious but sadly I still see so many project/program teams not resourced for success. At a minimum there are 4 ingredients for execution success: inject sufficient knowledge of the business outcomes (this includes subject matter expertise), project management (knowledge of how to get things done at scale) and change management skills (how to build momentum), plus an understanding of how to make things happen in your culture.
- Meet up in person weekly if possible, co-locate if feasible. I’m a big fan of hybrid working, WFH, WFA but also know a special magic happens when teams co-locate together. I remember moving a dispersed team into the same “war room” instead of opposite ends of the building, and the energy level and productivity skyrocketed. In our final “retrospective” (an agile term for a debrief), a few of the team said that was the best moment of the project.
- Do social things for team bonding. Eating a meal together regularly, doing an activity (I don’t mind lawn bowls, which we have in Australia). If your team is in different cities or countries, I’ve found there are some excellent activities you can arrange online.
