3 tips to focus on the strategic issues that matter most to you
-
Be razor clear – are you clear on exactly what you need to do to achieve your targets? Deliver your projects? Get that recognition or visibility or promotion that you’re after? For each of your priorities or targets, write down at least 3 items that you need to do to deliver these. If you aren’t clear on what you need to do, you need to break these down into more granular detail.
-
Find a way to be deliberate in how you spend your work time – what is your system that ensures your time is well spent? For example, I have a “to do” list which I sort by priority. I use a very simple Apple Notes synced between my phone and Mac, so it’s with me where-ever I am. That way I always know what tasks will give me the highest ROI. Some people prefer a Kanban/ Trello board, a platform such as Planview (ask me about this), or a physical notebook. Find something simple that suits your way of working so you can be purposeful, strategic and deliberate, rather than merely responding to what comes your way.
-
Cut out the noise – the information and people we surround ourselves with will shape our thoughts and ultimately actions. This happens at both a conscious and a subconscious level. In fact, we are being subconsciously primed all the time. What we are exposed to is framing how we view the world. How do you curate the information and templates you need to deliver your strategic work (ask me about this)? Do you think about WHO you spend your time with? How can you cut out the noise, the less positive / less helpful influences, to focus on the important stuff?
