Acceleration attracts admiration. The ability to deliver on strategy quickly impresses Boards and CEOs, projecting decisiveness, efficiency, and success.

Yet speed isn’t about making rash decisions or moving too hastily.  If we only inspire speed without regard to risk, we will appear reckless.  And we will make rash decisions.  We need to balance a sense of urgency with the underlying risks, and ensure we have done our homework.

So let’s look at how to build a mindset of speed, while exercising appropriate caution that reflect our stakeholder expectations, organizational requirements and our workplace culture.

3 tips to build a mindset of speed in strategy

1. Build a sense of urgency in team updates

Use regular updates to instill a sense of urgency. Show appreciation to team members who demonstrate this.  Acknowledge and reward quick wins and fast action, always mentioning that you’re seeking mitigation of risks. Your tone and energy will be infectious.  When your team sees urgency in your approach, they’ll follow suit.

2. Share Why Speed Matters in Everyday Conversations

Don’t wait for formal settings to stress the importance of speed. In casual chats, articulate why timely execution is vital for success. Your consistent messaging will foster a culture that values moving quickly and smartly.

3. Convey Speed Strategically to Your Board

When addressing the Board or executives, frame urgency as a strategic advantage. Explain how speed can mitigate risks, especially if we ignore AI and other tech risks unfolding in front of us and do nothing).   Transparency in your thought process can build credibility and strengthen buy-in.

By embedding urgency into your communication at every level, you create a culture that values action, energy and results.  Set the example, be transparent about the why, and watch your team and stakeholders rally around your vision.
