I’ve seen some of the most excellent strategies stall due to some common execution barriers.

This can happen in prestigious well known organizations, who have spent millions on some of the most prestigious consulting firms worldwide.  Leaders with outstanding reputations.

This is where strategy causes great stress.

Here is a new acronym that I’ve invented to describe this: STRESEGY.

Even the most impressive strategy can create STRESEGY.

One organizsation was at their wits end after spending millions, with no tangible results after 12 months.  I loved being called in to help on this gig.  Despite having a top notch team, fabulously HUGE impressive strategy decks, and full CEO support, they could not make progress.  It took 4 weeks to do a full program audit (did I say a big program with HUGE decks?), and give them the insights they needed.  They took immediate action, and I’m glad to say their strategic program got back on track.

Overcoming these 8 obstacles will allow you to deliver results faster.

Let’s explore three specific challenges and how to overcome them, so you can lead your team to success.

Pitfalls and Tips

  1. Too Many Tasks (The Spaghetti Problem)
    • Tip: Unravel the spaghetti, turning the strategy into discrete projects.
    • Why It Works: You cannot execute initiatives that are overly complex, jumbled and overlapping.
    • Too many Tasks
      • Tip: Simplify and focus on fewer things.
      • Why It Works: If you’re buried in HUGE strategy decks, even if they are worth millions and contain gold, you cannot see the wood for the trees.
  2. Responsibilities must be clear
    • Tip: Get your leaders across your organization to take on execution responsibility.
    • Why It Works: Strategy execution cannot rely on a central strategy program.
