You can intentionally design execution for success
Too many strategies aren’t delivered. Not because the strategy is flawed, but because the implementation was poorly designed.
I’ve seen it time and time again. A bold new strategy gets the green light, the leadership team is enthusiastic, but weeks later momentum stalls. Staff feel disconnected. Progress is patchy. Recent Gartner research finds that “only 47% of today’s enterprises meet their strategy objectives” (Gartner, 2024). Not much improvement from earlier studies published by McKinsey and Harvard Business Review.

Design Strategy Execution Programs That Work
Here are 3 tips to designing strategy programs for results:
1. Prioritise Simplicity Over Complexity
Complex strategies need a straightforward, well-structured delivery approach. This includes breaking work into bite-sized modules, and value-added governance. Sounds easy but so much governance just creates bureaucracy. AI has a key role to play here.
2. Aim for Integration Over Isolation
Siloed initiatives stall progress. This means strategic change management, blended with strategic program management. This is not traditional change management, nor is it traditional program management. It is future-focused, strategically-oriented, AI-enabled, AND Culture-Friendly.
3. Choose Adaptation Over Rigidity
You won’t get it perfect first go, design for learning. Upskill your team, ensure they can use AI safely to turbocharge their productivity.
Why It Matters
We need to design our strategy and execution process for optimal results. Execution is where strategy becomes reality. It is how executives leave a legacy of “runs on the board”. When you design strategy implementation programs according to these principles, you’ll see traction, momentum, and the precise impact that you intended.
That, is your legacy.
